Do More Reporting Too often beginning journalism students turn in stories that are weak, not necessarily because theyre poorly written, but because theyre thinly reported. Their stories dont have enough quotes, background information or statistical data, and its clear that theyre trying to piece together an article on the basis of meager reporting. A good rule of thumb: Do more reporting than is necessary. And interview more sources than you need to. Get all the relevant background information and statistics and then some. Do this and your stories will be examples of solid journalism, even if you havent yet mastered the newswriting format. Get More Quotes This goes along with what I said above about reporting.
